Description
An Unusual 17th Century Carved Oak Coffer of good colour & patination. The twin planked top with moulded edge centred by an inset square panel drilled with ventilation holes and carved with stylised foliage scrolled around a central quatrefoil, enriched with punchwork, in a raised channel moulded frame. The lid on iron strap hinges with a looped iron catch to the front, opening to reveal rebates for a till to one end (now missing) and a planked false base enclosing a compartment below. The triple panel facade richly carved with flowering plants issuing stylised fruit defined against a recessed pitted ground interspersed with fleurie crosses and fleur-de-lis. The frieze rail and stiles decorated with undulating stems, the base rail with trefoiled lunettes. 25” (65.5 cm) high, 50” (127 cm) wide, 21½” (54.5 cm) deep.
