Description
An Antiquarian New Testament Bible (A/F) believed to be bound in human skin and owned during the 18th century by the Baptist theologian John Gill (1697-1771), with his notes inscribed in ink to the borders including; ‘John Gill his book May the 10th’. The binding scored with apotropaic marks to the front and back and possibly older than the bible within. The book 7” x 5” and 2” thick (18 cm x 13 cm x 5 cm). Now housed in an intricately cast bronze casket with an oval portrait medallion centring the lid amidst a mass of renaissance style ornamentation, standing on winged lion-headed scroll feet, 4½” (11.5 cm) high, 9” x 7” (23 cm x 18 cm).
