Description
A Fabulous 17th Century Oak Wainscot Chair enriched with carving and of good colour & patination. The back surmounted by a shaped cresting rail carved with S-scrolls to the top; the voluted terminals forming lobe finials either side; the centre emblazoned with initials CMS and date 1671, interspersed with raised beads above a row of trefoiled C-scrolls over a recessed frieze of ornamental facet-cut appliqués and a decoratively carved cross rail enlivened with punchwork. The arcaded back panel adorned with heart motifs beneath the twin arches. The uprights carved with daisy wheel and lozenge designs defined against a recessed pitted ground, and flanked by pierced scrolling spandrels. The twin reed moulded arms with stylized ‘dolphin head’ terminals on baluster turned posts leading down to the planked seat above serpentine cut apron rails raised on baluster turned legs with square block feet united by peripheral stretchers, 47¼” (120 cm) high, 26” (66 cm) wide, the seat `8½” (47 cm) high.*
