Description
A Fine James I Oak Cacqueteuse-type Wainscot Chair dated 1617. The tall panelled back having a swept dome cresting rail emblazoned with a lion-mask and wrythen whorls in a recessed panel with pitted ground to the centre, flanked by chip carved foliage above an upper horizontal panel enriched with a tulip flanked by thistles, and a principal panel below carved with lozenge motif and whorled roundels interspersed with date numerals. The moulded framework having recessed dark-stained channels inset with stepped adornments of contrasting timber. The scroll end arms on tapered columnar posts leading down to a plank seat above inlaid rails, raised on turned legs with block feet united by peripheral stretchers, 53½ in (136 cm) high, 24 ins (61 cm) wide, 19 ins (48 cm) deep.
