Lot 658

A Rare Mixed Whitework/Reticella Needle Lace/Cutwork Polychrome Band Sampler dating to the second half of 17th century. The sampler stitched with floral/geometric bands and two alphabet bands, predominantly in greens & reds with touches of pink and blue. The cutwork and needle-lace bands beautifully executed along with the white-work alphabet and Greek key design. The family initials and prominent green/red pallet possibly indicating a Scottish provenance (and if this is the case, it would make it a very rare sampler indeed as definitive late 17th/early 18th century Scottish samplers are very rare) 28¾” x 7½” (73 cm x 19 cm) excluding modern frame.
