A Very Fine English Quaker Band Sampler dated 1695 by Elizabeth Phippard worked in bright floss silks on a linen ground, and remaining in almost pristine condition. The thirteen bands varying in size and incorporating large stylised roses/pansies, with a band displaying two boxer figures dressed in striped, buttoned tunic with striped breeches and hose, bearing floral gifts. [Elizabeth was born to Quakers John & Dorothy Phippard (nee Toms) Olaves, Southwark, London on 27th November 1681, and died a spinster in 1757 aged 77. An almost identical undated sampler by Elizabeth Strong can be seen in Millers; ‘How to Compare & Value’ by Stephen & Carol Huberm p. 43 (2002), and a very similar example by Jane Young dated 1728 in Dr Goodhart Collection P. 115. 33½” x 9½” (86 cm x 24 cm) excluding the later frame.
