An Early 19th Century Rigger’s Serving Mallet, dated 1809. The carved wooden hand mallet used on board sailing ships for passing a ‘serving’ round a rope. The turned handle surmounted by a carved lion sejant bearing a shield inscribed HMS LION (A 64 gun ship, built Portsmouth Dockyard, Launched 1777, Broken up Nov 1837) The demi-lune head inscribed with owner’s name Joseph Miller and date 1809, 12” (30 cm) in length.
