A 16th Century Spanish Carved Chestnut Coffer having a thick single piece lid with stepped reeding to the borders, on iron strap hinges. The box composed of hefty single plank timbers connected by through dovetail joints re-enforced with iron corner brackets with decoratively cut fleur-de-lys terminals. The sides mounted with wrythen iron carrying handles. The front gouge carved with a repeated geometric trellis design and inset with an iron boteh shaped escutcheon, above a shaped base rail, 26¾” (68 cm) high, 49” (125 cm) wide, 20” (51 cm) deep.
