Description
A Large & Rare 17th Century Colonial Folk Art Coffer. The plank top with stepped edge moulding above through box-jointed sides. The front richly decorated with naively carved figural scenes in two tiers, possibly a marriage celebration, depicting imbibers & pipe smokers to the top tier above a procession of dancers and musicians to the bottom with a church either side and figures ringing the bells. The women having their hair tied back in a long plait, wearing a apron. The men wearing high crowned hats with shoulder length hair, defined against a pitted ground with an iron hasp & lock plate to the centre. The chip carved plinth rail with serpentine cut base and incised panels of diagonal crosses, 30” (76 cm) high, 60” (152 cm) wide, 23” (58.5 cm) deep.
