Description
A Large 16th Century Carved Oak Iron-bound Dome-topped Marriage Chest of tapering rectangular form. The front board carved with Romayne portraits of a man & wife in moulded roundels either side flanking a central roundel with scrolled heraldic shield. The through-dovetail joined trunk braced by decorative pierced corner brackets and straps with fleur-de-lis terminals, and having three strap hinges to the planked lid, forming hasps to the front; the central one meeting a shaped iron lock-plate, the side ones with pierced ends slotting over padlock loops. The interior having a lidded till to one. The end boards fitted with wrythen iron carrying handles.
