A Fine 17th Century Stumpwork Embroidery bearing an old label to verso reading; ‘Charles I Picture depicting Biblical Story of the presenting of John the Baptist’s head to Salome by Herod – worked in flat stitch on a silk ground’ and another inscribed ‘LORD PLENDER ‘2”. The biblical allegory worked in coloured silks with mica embellishments to the windows of the buildings behind, contained within an oval of looped braid and surrounded by a finely embroidered setting worked in a variety of stitch-work depicting flowers interspersed with insects, winged griffins to the top, turreted buildings either side and a lion & leopard reclining to the bottom corners on an ivory silk ground. Displayed behind glass in a moulded faux tortoiseshell frame 19¼” x 22¾” (49 cm x 58 cm) inclusive.
