A Large 18th Century Norwegian Burr Birchwood Peg Tankard. The domed lid emblazoned with a lion passant on an up-curved spear, encircled by bands of chip carved moulding. The lid hinged on a wooden pin attached to the side handle and surmounted by a recumbent lion holding a ball in its front paws and balancing another on it’s head, with punchwork embellishment to it’s mane. The cylindrical sides ornamented with a crown to the front flanked by swagged drapery in a frieze band and raised on four leonine supports, 11½” (29 cm) in height.
