Workshop of Guglielmo della Porta (1515- 1577). A Magnificent Italian Late Renaissance Crucifix, Circa 1570-1600. The beautifully detailed silver Cristo Morto depicted wearing a draped loin cloth and wreathed in a platted golden crown of twisted wire; his head emitting golden rays. His body nailed to a tortoiseshell veneered cross embellished with gilt silver mounts and having a titulus above his head inscribed ‘INRI’ for the Latin ‘Isevs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdeorvm’ (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), with a Calvary Skull placed on the cross below his feet. The cross measuring 19½” (49.4 cm) in height and mounted into a modern stepped plinth.
