Description
A Mid 16th Century Chip Carved Oak Coffer. The twin planked lid in an outer frame on iron loop hinges opening to reveal a trough to one end of the interior. The sides fitted with iron swing handles. The front board enriched with a frieze of six carved lancet arches containing decorative roundels infilled with geometric motifs, divided by leafy trefoiled spandrels and set between an upper band of flower heads flanking an iron lock plate, and lower band of feather carving centred by a small square chip-carved reserve. The wide arced spandrels enriched with long leafy spurs, 24½” (62 cm) high, 46” (117 cm) wide, 19” (49 cm) deep.
