A Fabulous Quality French Empire Gilt Bronze ‘Le Char de Cérès’ Clock signed Julien le Roy, after Pierre-Philippe Thomire. Ceres depicted wearing a castle-shaped crown and long flowing robe seated in her cushioned chariot holding a globe on her lap, accompanied by two putti: one with a cornucopia spilling an abundance of flowers, the other with a bundle of wheat. The chariot pulled by two magnificent lions with lambrequin saddle cloths. The movement set amidst swags of tasseled drapery with the enamelled chapter ring forming the chariot’s wheel, marked with Roman Numerals counting the hours and minute dots inbetween encircling gilded spokes. The piece standing on a vert marble plinth adorned with gilt mounts and raised on winged lion paw feet, 20” (51 cm) high, 24½” (61 cm) wide, 5¾” (14.5 cm) deep.
