Description
A Rare Sakalava, Peoples of Madagascar, Early 20th Century Funerary Box. The box naively carved with a protea flower head to one side and having a sliding lid with extended D-end pierced and threaded with draw strings operating four figures and a large beaked bird that pops out of the box when the door is lowered (to promote the rebirth of the dead in the world of the ancestors). The figures featuring characteristic Sakalava coiffures. Measuring approx. 4” (10 cm) high, 5½” (14 cm) wide, 9” (23 cm) in length, the D-ended lid 10½” (17 cm) in length.
