A Fine Late 17th Century Tortoiseshell-veneered Longcase Clock of diminutive proportions. The 8” (20 cm) square brass dial with silvered chapter ring signed James Whittaker fecit along the bottom and engraved with Roman numerals divided by cruciform half hour markers, encircling a finely engraved centre of scrolling flowers & foliage incorporating calendar aperture and single pierced steel hand. The weight driven movement with verge escapement, tapered arbors, small collets and outside countwheel strike on a bell in a posted frame. The case having a flat topped hood with moulded cornice and ebony strung frieze above integral barley twist corner columns. The edge-moulded trunk door inlaid with ebony stringing and having a yellow glass lenticle. Standing on a triple plinth base (reduced), 70¾” (180 cm) high.
