Description
A Fine 18th Century Treen Snuff Box, possibly yew. The lid elaborately carved with Arma Christi (”Weapons of Christ”), or the Instruments of the Passion, with Christ crucified to the centre flanked by the sun & moon, the penitent thief Dismas and wicked thief Gestas amidst implements; ladder, sponge on reed, hammer, pincers, spear, along with a cock, chalice and jug. The hinged, slightly domed lid carved with heart motifs above later gouge carved date 1427 and incised depiction of a pilgrim to the base, 1½” (4 cm) high, 4” x 3” (10 cm x 7.5 cm).
