Description
A Small & Rare 16th Century Italian Cypress wood Coffer of boarded construction decorated with elaborate penwork. The rectangular lid having applied edge moulding incised with criss-cross decoration and mounted on iron loop hinges, opening to reveal rebates for tills either side of the interior. The front board fitted with an iron lockplate, and intricately decorated with two panels; each displaying a lady & gentleman stood amongst a profusion of scrolling daisy wheels defined against a cut away nail-punched ground above a band of undulating oak leaves. The supporting end planks incised with roundels sprouting sprays of foliage and standing on trefoil cut feet, 19” (49 cm) high,26 (67 cm) wide, 13½” (34 cm) deep.
