A Fine Quality Carved Mahogany Dining Chair, probably by Thomas Chippendale, ex Nostell Priory, believed to be the 7th or 8th chair from a suite of chairs made for Nostell Priory. See ‘The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale’ by Christopher Gilbert, page 83, Fig 131. See also ‘The Art of Thomas Chippendale’ page 52, ‘Chippendale Furniture’ illustration 169 and ‘Thomas Chippendale 1718-1779’ page 28 where a set of 6 chairs are mentioned, and page 115 where a set of 7 chairs are mentioned, circa 1768. The swept top rail carved with scrolling foliate flourishes to the upturned terminals above a pierced central splat of interlaced straps and crested acanthus. The crimson velvet drop-in seat on square canted legs with open C-scroll brackets to the corners and an H-form stretcher. Stamped ‘F’ on back. 38” (96.5 cm) high, 21¾” (55 cm) wide, 20” (51 cm) deep.
