Description
A Fine Quality Antique Portrait on Ivory painted in intricate detail with a depiction of Pedro II of Portugal (reigned 1683-1706) dressed in finery with an elaborate wig, ermine lined cloak over embellished armour, stood in front of a draped curtain with crown set upon a pedestal to his side below the royal crest. The pedestal’s plinth inscribed in gold ‘Don Sebastian, King of Portugal, Killed in Africa 1578’. The window behind displaying a distant battle encampment, 8½ in x 6½ in (21.5 cm x 16.5 cm). Set in a decorative carved giltwood frame with an inscription to the verso dated 1868 15½ in x 13 in (39.5 cm x 33 cm).
