Description
A Charming Early 18th Century Oak Wall Hanging Salt or Candle Box of boarded construction. The whole richly decorated with naive blind-fret carving. The sloping hinged lid with chip carved ends emblazoned with a pair of winged angels bearing a crowned cartouche enclosing the initials GI (for George Ist) above a swagged garland and date 1728 flanked by birds. The front board decorated with carpenter’s tools. Standing on a serpentine base carved with voluted strap-work and retaining traces of red paint, 8¾” (22 cm) high, 9½” (24 cm) wide, 5½” (14 cm) deep.
