Description
A Rare 18th/Early 19th Century Oval Tôleware Box. The top painted with sprays of flowers surrounding a glazed aperture enclosed by a raised circular cap inscribed ”SAMUEL DANGERFIELD”, 5” x 3¼” (13 cm x 8 cm) [John Caspall suggests in his book ‘Making Fire and Light in the Home – pre 1820’ that such a box may be a tinder box where combustible material is placed in the lower half of the box and the sun’s rays then trained through the glass lens to light the material. It would however be of much use on a dull day!].
