Description
A Fine & Rare Early 18th Century Oval Horn Tobacco Box by John Obrisset. The tightly-fitting lift-off lid pressed with an equestrian portrait of ‘Peter the Great’ of Russia, in commemoration of his creation of the Russian Fleet in 1714, and depicting him in armour sitting astride his horse, a laurel wreath on his head, the blade of his sword resting on his right shoulder, ships of the fleet in view on the horizon between the horse’s prancing legs. Marked ‘OB’ to the inside of the lid, and having a raised oval border to the inside of the base, which according to Phillips denotes that the box was made by Obrisset himself. 4” (10.2 cm) in length, 1¼” (3 cm) deep.
