A Painted Wooden Toy Ark with a menagerie of naively carved pairs of animals and birds along with figures of Noah & his wife (12 pairs of animals with a further 7 smaller pairs of animals, some painted, and 6 pairs of birds). Written note inscribed; 'This ark belonged to my late husband who was born in 1928. Presumably therefore it was bought between 1930-33. The ark was reputed to have been made by wounded ex-service men from the first world war. It was probably made in the Oldham area. Mary Shaw' (sic) With printed verse stuck to the inside of the hinged lid; 'God saw men's wicked ways, and nipped them in the bud, He let it rain for forty days, and drowned them in a flood. The bad all died, but mark! God save good Noah's life, He save him in a mighty Ark, With his three sons and wife. And two of every insect, beast and bird- As He had said. For you will find, God always keeps his work. So now with you and me, Be this well understood! If bad we too be punished, But helped if we are good.'
